The Wrap Institute created a universal eight-step cleaning protocol for all vehicle wrap types - PPF, color change and commercial: (1) remove hardware and document what could/couldn't be removed for future reference, (2) flush gaps with air compressor or steamer, (3) clean the entire body and edges with Absolute Rinseless Wash (one cap per gallon distilled water), (4) clay bar the entire vehicle using a mix of two caps per gallon and use the Liquid8r towel to speed drying by 50-80%.
(5) degreases the entire body and edges with 70% IPA poured onto yellow towels (yellow shows any remaining dirt for quality control), (6) apply Triple S low-tack solution (full coverage on horizontals for high-tack films/PPF and only body lines only for low-tack films), (7) do a focused degrease with a strong degreaser on edges and recessed areas where wraps fail most. (8) apply cleaning stickers to each section, providing visual confirmation to the entire shop that proper prep was completed—especially critical with multiple installers.
Key tool recommendations: Yellotools YelloBlade for removing adhesive residue (won't scratch water-based paint), 365 Edgeless microfiber towels, Clay Bar Scrubber with dark blue jersey side for bugs, and the IK 360-degree sprayer.
This protocol ensures long-term wrap durability by thoroughly addressing the edges and recessed areas that cause most failures.
